They say you inherit certain traits from your father—your height, hairline, and eye color. What they don’t mention is the love of smoking meat. From a young age, all I wanted to do was be my dad’s shadow. Whatever he did, I wanted to do too. As far back as I can remember, I was helping in some way or another around the pit.
As I grew older, I graduated from preparing and seasoning to flipping the meat and “checking on it,” eventually lighting the pit myself. To my dad, it didn’t matter what day of the week it was—there was always a reason to fire up the pit. Whether it was hotdogs and burgers, chicken, fajitas, or brisket and ribs on a random Saturday, the pit was always alive with flavor.
What I once enjoyed doing with my dad slowly became a chore, and I lost interest for a time. But fast forward over 10 years, and the spark was reignited. Now, I’m cooking every weekend for the family and proudly nudging the old man about how good my BBQ is. I even started competing, cooking at pop-up events, catering weddings, and taking small orders for friends and family.
“Son, just remember who taught you what you know,” he would remind me, always proud to call himself the “Pit Master.”
Now, with his passing and his final blessing, I carry the family “Pit Master” title, and his legacy lives on. As I light the fire, I’m reminded of the burning passion that once drove me to be just like my father. As the smoke rises and drifts from the stack, it connects us once again—lifting to the heavens and never letting me forget the bond we shared.
This is TRUE LEGACY BBQ.
